Today we are well and truly embracing girl power as we not only look at some of the best books for 8 – 10 year old girls. We are actually looking at the characters in these books. The female characters that are great role models for your children, the characters who will inspire your child to be the best they can be and characters who are just flat out cool!
This list is purely for fun so get your child with you as you look at who we think are the best female characters from children’s books. As the discussion here in the Mumzilla office got pretty heated about this. While we have a top-five, we do also have some honorable mentions at the bottom. This was the only way to stop a Hunger Games-like event happening in the office.
Number 5: Alice
Alice in Wonderland
It is fair to say that any collection of books for 8 – 10 year old girls is probably going to have Alice in Wonderland in it. This is a timeless classic and the original book is actually a fair bit different to the Disney Classic that most kids associate with this tale. The thing is there are many versions of this story out there, but one thing that is for sure is that Alice is a really strong character who never backs down and is willing to literally jump into a rabbit hole in search of adventure!
Number 4: Harriet
Harriet the Spy
The Harriet the Spy series of books have been something kids for years have loved and a major reason for that is Harriet herself. While each story in this series is full of excitement, drama, and mystery. It is the fact that Harriet is not scared to stand up for herself, be a good friend and learn from her mistakes that makes her a really strong female character for girls to read about and look up to.
Number 3: Matilda
Here we have another real classic when it comes to books for 8 – 10 year old girls and actually just books in general. Matilda is a great story and a real page-turner for most kids who pick it up for the first time. What is so great about Matilda is how wise she is for her years. She knows that her family kind of sucks, but she tries her best not to let it get her down. Not only that, despite the rather crummy hand she has been dealt, Matilda still treats people right and tries to be a good person. Which is a great message for any young lady to read about?
Number 2: Nancy Drew
Hmm, putting Nancy Drew on here as well as Harriet the Spy was a tough call as they offer a kind of similar message. Nancy Drew though, we felt acts a little more grown-up and self- assured so we felt she deserved to be just a tad higher on our list of top female characters from children’s books. Nancy is always brave and never scared to stand up for what she feels is right, especially if someone bad is up to no good!
Number 1: Hermione Granger
You probably had a feeling that Hermione was going to be number one. What is great about Harry Potter is that while we are looking at books for 8 – 10 year old girls. The fact is the Harry Potter series is really for everyone. Hermione is such a pivotal part of these stories, while Ron and Harry are messing around, you can always count on Hermione to keep a serious head, do her school work and try to be the best she can. The fact that she is also pretty cool and stood up to that bully and jerk, Malfoy also makes her awesome.
We felt that five characters were not enough (as well as did some major arguing about it) so we have put together a few honourable mentions who just missed out on cracking our list.
Ginny was so close to making our top 5! There are some would have even picked her over Hermione! Ginny is a great character and one who always stands up for what she believes in as well as those she loves. What is really awesome about Ginny is that she actually has some of the best progression of any character in the Harry Potter books. Kids get to really see her come into her own as a person and a hero as the books progress.
Wizard of Oz
When it comes to books for 8 to 10 year old girls, The Wizard of Oz series is great. Dorothy Gale from Kansas is such an interesting character and one who is very, very brave. She gets into many strange situations, but she faces them all head-on in her quest to get home. One of the cool things here is that there are more than a few different versions of this story out there so kids can find it interesting to read about slighting different versions of Dorothy.
We wanted to have one more really classic kids character on this list and we felt that Pipi Longstocking was perfect. Not only does she see herself as the strongest person in the world. She is always up for an adventure and she laughs in the face of danger. Not to mention she has a monkey buddy which of course automatically makes her pretty awesome!
So, there you have it. Thee are characters that feature in many books for 8 – to year old girls that we feel are amazing. Not only will a child be reading a fantastic story or series of books that star these characters. They will also be reading about powerful and strong female characters that can inspire them to do amazing things!
